More than a nodding head

As a month of football kicked off on Friday night, an impressive Italian win suggested they might be a real threat in the delayed 2020 Euros. With England, Belgium and the Dutch all winning, it promises to be an exciting tournament. However, the story that made most headlines was that of Christian Eriksen, who collapsed halfway through the game between Denmark and Finland on Saturday. Now recovering in Hospital, having been given CPR on the pitch, we saw the true value of having trained medical teams at sporting events. The team on the pitch in Copenhagen almost certainly saved his life.

With fans and audiences returning to live sporting and entertainment events, there is a feeling that normality is slowly returning. This was certainly the case at the PGA Golf Championship on Sunday night. Thousands of golf fans massed around the 18th green at Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course, to see Phil Mickelson become the oldest winner of a Major, a few weeks before his 51st birthday. At a time when professional golf is being dominated by those who hit the ball great distances, how does a 50-year-old win such a prestigious event?

Grass roots sport returns with a few business pointers

It is great to have grass roots football back again. For many still at school it is what they look forward to each weekend. Playing with their friends, hopefully scoring a goal and winning the match. And just like the professionals, they want to go through to the next round of the cup or climb the league and get promoted. The emotional roller coaster of a 7-4 win this weekend was evident throughout my son’s team, during a game that was played in all four of our British seasons over 90 minutes. As linesman, I was pleased to still have a luke-warm coffee in a flask, left over from the morning’s golf.
