As with any generational iteration, USB-C brings substantial technological advances. The degree of those advancements depends on which protocol the device is using: standard USB 3.1 or Thunderbolt 3.
Both protocols are supported via the physical USB-C connector, so make sure you know which protocol your device is supporting to maximize performance.
Higher data bandwidth: The primary benefits of USB-C begin with higher data bandwidth: a standard transfer rate of up to 10 Gbps via standard USB protocol or up to 40 Gbps via Thunderbolt 3.
Faster device charging: With the higher throughput, you’ll be able to charge a phone, tablet, or laptop with the same connector in a fraction of the time it would normally take. USB-C also allows for greater multimedia experiences, such as dual 4k resolution display output with Thunderbolt 3 enabled devices/displays or active noise canceling headsets that don’t require their own power.

Organizations can be notoriously resistant to adopting new types of technology. We’re passionate about what’s coming around the corner because we can see the potential applications and financial benefits of the technology, while our customers are usually firmly focused on today’s challenges in operating their businesses. To set the stage for USB-C consider doing these two things:
- Search for the numbers.The play, as always, is to share the financial benefits to the firm when presenting devices enabled with USB-C. But without strong use cases and studies from research firms such as Gartner and IDC, it’ll be a challenge to provide strong monetary benefits. Instead, keep an eye out for ambitious customers who are willing to try new technology. Work with that customer to measure their results before and after usage of USB-C devices.
- Focus on speed and efficiency. It’s a fine line you’ll have to walk because the inevitable question will arise, “What’s wrong with my current USB port?” The opportunity lies in giving them a vision of the future with devices that are thinner, more portable, and with more capabilities. In the case of USB-C, the case you can make is, “When you have to power your device, you can also use that power to transmit data, making your organization faster and more efficient than your competition.”
Industry-Wide Options May Be on the Horizon
The adoption of USB-C shows no signs of slowing down as more industry support is on the horizon. Intel, for example, announced recently that they plan to integrate Thunderbolt 3 into their future CPUs and to make the Thunderbolt specification available to the industry under a nonexclusive, royalty-free license.
